I'm not quite ready to purchase one, but I have been looking into different breeds that I'd like to get lately. With such a wide array to choose from, I've narrowed it down to two. Essentially, they are almost the same dog. Both temperments are cheerful, both are energetic, both are natural small game hunters. I will eventually choose between a Norwich Terrier and a Wirehaired Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. The later is just fun to say.
The Norwich. A very intelligent, friendly dog by all accounts. The Norwich and Norfolk terriers weren't recognised seperately by the AKC until 1979. I like the Norwich better because of the upright ears. The tails are usually docked. This is one of the smallest breeds of terriers, at about 8 to 10 inches tall and only 9-13 pounds, it's a great apartment dog. As long as they get adequate exercise daily, they are not destructive. Shedding is minimal, as well as grooming. They were bred for hunting out rats and foxes.
The Wirehaired Portuguese Podengo Pequeno aka. the small Portuguese Hound dog. Again, a very friendly dog by all accounts. About the same size as the Norwich Terrier. The Medio Podengo played Zeus in Zeus and Roxanne. I like that this breed is scruffy looking, rustic as described by breeders. There are only a few thousand in the states but their popularity is slowly rising. Very minimal grooming required. They do need more a bit more exercise than the Norwich, but then again so do I.
I really like both breeds, and could deffinitely see myself getting either one. I can't wait!!
